Summary of the Tamarack Program

Intake and Assessment:  This is the first step in discovering and accepting what is wrong. You share  the details of your active addiction and attempts at recovery with the Intake Counsellor when you apply for admission.

Individual Counseling:  Provides you with a special confidential relationship where you will gain self awareness, support, help with planning your recovery and in finding and keeping the motivation and commitment to change.

Morning Structured Group Therapy:  Here you will be able to discover the many sides of rehabilitation and recovery. 41 different topics cover life skills areas, employability, mental health, emotional health, spirituality, relapse prevention, relationships, family of origin, attachment, family recovery, and many more.

Afternoon Group therapy:  The focus is on the here and now complexities of your life issues, the self defeating thinking and the addictions you have acquired to try and cope with them and what you will need to change. Discussions and sharing are in depth, stimulating the self discovery, self honesty and commitment you will need to rebuild your life and to be abstinent from the drugs, alcohol or addictive behaviors and processes that were killing you and any hopes for a normal life, relationships, family and happiness.

Therapeutic Community Living:  House rules and curfews are in place to provide the safe boundaries needed to create healthy peer support and cooperation 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Living in Tamarack will help you understand that the world does not revolve around you and that others need your flexibility and understanding in order to build trust and support.

Aftercare:  For those who complete the 60 day program, Tamarack provides a weekly support group  meeting for as long as former clients want to attend. Aftercare provides peer support, trust, learning and friendship.

Follow up: After completing the program, Tamarack provides 4 free individual counseling sessions to support you and help you deal with the things that come up in recovery. Counselling can continue after that at your option.

12 Step Recovery Fellowships:  Tamarack clients attend AA, CA, NA, and GA in order to experience and learn the many indispensable principles of abstinence based recovery these fellowships foster. Originally pioneered by the Alcoholics Anonymous fellowship, 12 step recovery methods have proven to combine some of the best ideas that are used in many modern psychotherapeutic practices such as the Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, Psychodynamic Therapies as well as age old Spiritual development methods of healing and recovery. Trying to recover on your own is a very unsafe way to go and has proven time and again that it does not provide all of the many ingredients needed for Change. Sticking with the people and methods that work is the best way to do it.

Program Exercises, Readings, and Workbooks:  These activities are all part of the cognitive and emotional self discovery that are part of the group work and individual counselling you will experience in tamarack.

Referral:  Tamarack will refer you to external support services, systems and individuals as needed while you are in treatment and after you complete the program and are in the Followup or Aftercare components of recovery.

Reunions:  Twice a year at Christmas and in the summer, Tamarack hosts a celebratory barbecue or supper for our past and present clients to reunite and have some fun and fellowship. It is important to mark your progress and renew your commitment to today and tomorrow.

Pre Treatment Program:   We can start people in half day morning sessions 3 times a week which includes one to one counselling and help in completing a plan for the afternoon and following day and the next weekend. This pre treatment program is specifically for those who do not yet have the 28 days clean and sober time to enter the full residential program. These clients participate in the regular morning group with the full time residential clients.

Family Program:  We currently work with family members affected by addiction and we are developing a dedicated Family program component in which family members or spouse attend a number of special educational sessions facilitated by our Family Coordinator. The Objective is to help these people develop emotional self management skills, the better to deal with the difficulties of relating to an addict.

All Inclusive Costs: Pre-Treatment - $800.00       60 Day residential program - $4,500.00

If I do recover...

The gains Tamarack clients make through their own effort supported by group therapy and individual counselling, prepare them for the extraordinary journey they will make in Recovery after leaving the House.

Many clients find that they can now go back to or greatly improve their relationships with family members as well as with spouses or significant others. When one recovering person in a family system changes, the system itself changes as well.

There is more than meets the eye in this personal progress. Re-united families and strengthened relationships have a profound impact on the communities our clients return to. Neighbors and neighborhoods are revitalized in many small positive ways when a family is strengthened.

I may have a problem with alcohol and/or other drugs

"Lately, I’m feeling awful about the alcohol, drugs, or both and people are on my case about it. Something tells me I really should talk to a professional."

"Once I thought I might be addicted and got some help... but later found myself thinking, 'No, if everyone would just treat me with some respect and leave me alone I’ll be okay'. Things didn’t change much and now I’m still at this crossroad and still using. My problems are mounting up and I just don’t know what I am or what to do. I just want some peace."

Tamarack Recovery Centre: You are pretty much where many people we see are at when they call us. We can help. Just call before the losses really start happening.

Someone I know has a problem with alcohol and/or drugs

"A person I love and care about is wasting their life and driving me and everyone else crazy. We thought they might get their act together... and once in a while they did. They even tried a program once or twice, and we really hoped that this time it would all work out."

Tamarack Recovery Centre: If only it could or would. But if you are this concerned, it may be time to intervene in a serious way. We can help you plan what to do. We do have a program for family members and spouses if you need support and encouragement. And we can try to help you get your loved one to start our Pre Treatment or Residential Treatment Program.

I've relapsed

"I got help and was doing okay, but I got the urge and I thought 'Why are you making such a big deal about this, it’s okay?' especially with the way I was feeling at the time which was... mad, sad, glad, had, bored, scared, alone, defective, shunned, hopeless, or happy confident, joyous, wonderful. What was it this time?"

Tamarack Recovery Centre: An addict’s mind wants to use and to justify grabbing whatever (seems to) makes sense at the time. These thoughts meld into a seamless, obsessive and unshakable urge. It’s real, it’s yours, it’s out of control and will power seems to be a case of "why bother to even try."
