Tamarack Rehab Inc. (originally Kia Zan Inc.) was originally created as a for profit organization in 1974 to provide Rehabilitation services to young men and women with chemical dependency and the related living problems. With a change in government and new rules in place, Kia Zan Inc re-incorporated as a non-profit organization with the Province of Manitoba. The Letters Patent for Kia Zan (now Tamarack) Inc. as a non-profit were granted on April 19, 1975.

In March of 1998, the Board of Directors approved a name change from Kia Zan Inc. to Tamarack Rehab Inc. and in April, 1998 the Province of Manitoba Corporations Branch recognized the name change.

The Letters Patent gave the agency the authority to carry out many functions in the field of chemical dependency. One of these functions as stated in the Letters Patent is to: . . . authorize Tamarack Rehab Inc. to establish, operate and maintain Rehabilitation centres to provide counselling, guidance, and rehabilitative Rehabilitation for individuals residing in such residential Rehabilitation centres operated by Tamarack Rehab Inc.

The Volunteer Board of Directors and past and current Executive Directors operate Tamarack Rehab under the provisions of these Letters Patent. They specifically authorize:

1. Counselling (both individual and group counselling and both in and out patient)
2. Guidance.
3. Rehabilitation services for addicts.
4. Assistance in learning how to problem solve,
5. Finding solutions to living problems.
6. Anger issues and Assertiveness training.

7. Relationship difficulties.
8. Relapse prevention techniques
9. Developing a workable recovery program.

Over the years the Tamarack Rehab program has provided each of these services to a varying degree. The emphasis was dependent upon the direction given by the Board of Directors, the wishes of the Executive Director and the expertise of the counselling staff.

Tamarack Rehab Is an Addictions Rehabilitation Centre. Long-term rehabilitation gives drug-addicted persons a better chance of overcoming the cravings for their drugs of choice. In some cases, it takes up to three months for the chemical to be completely removed from a persons system or for the brain to regenerate. An 8-week program following a one-month primary care program offers the person the time needed to overcome the adverse effects of the chemical they have been abusing. Once drug free, these individuals can make better lifestyle changes and realistic choices.
